The Zodiac Bestiary
Discover your animal archetype, shadow & becoming.
What if we looked at the zodiac through the instincts of the animal kingdom?
The Zodiac Bestiary is my personal exploration of the twelve zodiac signs through animal archetypes. Each pairing represents a different expression of energy: how it moves, protects itself, communicates, creates, connects, and learns to direct its own nature.
These animals aren’t here to tell you who you must be. They’re invitations to explore parts of yourself you may recognize, parts you may be learning to understand, and parts you may not have considered before.
Evolution isn’t becoming less of what you are; it’s learning how to direct what you are.
An instinct isn’t automatically good or bad. Its expression depends on awareness, circumstances, and how we choose to work with it. The goal isn’t to reject one animal in favor of another, but to explore what each can teach us.
Meet the twelve archetypes
Look through the Bestiary and notice which animals catch your attention. Read the descriptions, but leave room for your own interpretation. You don’t have to relate to every quality for an archetype to offer you something valuable.
Aries — Hyena / Dragon
Instinct, boldness & personal power
The hyena represents adaptability, resourcefulness, social intelligence, and the ability to find a way forward under pressure. The dragon represents formidable power, courage, and the potential to direct one’s intensity toward a greater purpose.
Reflect: Where does your instinct help you survive, and where could you learn to use your power more intentionally?
Taurus — Bull / Tiger
Grounded strength & deliberate action
The bull represents stability, persistence, physical presence, and the strength to hold one’s ground. The tiger represents focused power, independence, patience, and decisive action when the moment is right.
Reflect: Where does your persistence serve you, and when might a deliberate change in direction serve you better?
Gemini — African Grey Parrot / Raven
Communication, curiosity & deeper understanding
The African Grey Parrot represents communication, observation, adaptability, and the ability to learn from the world around it. The raven represents curiosity, resourcefulness, pattern recognition, and the exploration of deeper meaning.
Reflect: What have you learned by gathering information, and what might become possible when you slow down, connect the pieces, and discover your own understanding?
Cancer — Rabbit / Crab
Sensitivity, protection & emotional boundaries
The rabbit represents sensitivity, alertness, gentleness, and an instinct for recognizing when something feels safe or uncertain. The crab represents protection, boundaries, and the ability to carry a sense of shelter while navigating changing environments.
Reflect: When does your sensitivity help you recognize what you need, and how can you protect your softness without letting fear make every decision?
Leo — Peacock / Lion
Visibility, self-expression & confident presence
The peacock represents beauty, display, individuality, and the willingness to be seen. The lion represents courage, presence, and the strength to occupy space without needing to prove its worth at every turn.
Reflect: Where are you ready to express yourself more fully, and what would confidence look like if it didn’t depend on constant approval?
Virgo — Bowerbird / Weaverbird
Discernment, craftsmanship & intentional creation
The bowerbird represents selection, arrangement, aesthetic expression, and the careful construction of an environment that communicates something. The weaverbird represents patience, intricate craftsmanship, and the ability to build through repeated, purposeful effort.
Reflect: What are you creating through the small choices you make, and how can your attention to detail serve your vision without becoming perfectionism?
Libra — Deer / Black Swan
Grace, awareness & self-possession
The deer represents gentleness, sensitivity, attentiveness, and an awareness of the surrounding environment. The black swan represents striking individuality, mystery, and the courage to remain distinct rather than conforming to expectations.
Reflect: Where does your grace help you connect with others, and where do you need to remember that kindness doesn’t require abandoning your boundaries?
“I’ll offer you grace, but don’t mistake my grace for permission.”
Scorpio — Jaguar / Owl
Depth, instinct & perception
The jaguar represents quiet strength, independence, intensity, and the ability to move with purpose without announcing every intention. The owl represents observation, discernment, and the willingness to look beyond an immediate impression.
These are two complementary facets rather than stages of evolution: one explores embodied power and instinct, while the other explores perception and insight.
Reflect: What do you understand through direct experience, and what becomes clearer when you pause to observe?
Sagittarius — Wild Horse / Mustang
Freedom, exploration & self-direction
The wild horse represents movement, untamed spirit, exploration, and a desire for freedom. The mustang evokes resilience, adaptability, and the strength to continue navigating a changing landscape.
Reflect: What does freedom mean to you, and how can you pursue it while remaining intentional about the direction you’re traveling?
Capricorn — Raccoon / Cat
Resourcefulness, independence & discernment
The raccoon represents cleverness, curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to work with what’s available. The cat represents independence, self-possession, selectivity, and the ability to conserve energy rather than respond to every demand.
Reflect: Where are you using your resourcefulness to make things work, and where could you become more selective about what deserves your time?
Aquarius — Fox / Crow
Ingenuity, unconventional thinking & perspective
The fox represents cleverness, adaptability, observation, and finding alternative routes when the obvious path doesn’t work. The crow represents social intelligence, problem-solving, curiosity, and the ability to learn through observation and experience.
Reflect: What assumptions are you ready to question, and what might you discover by approaching a familiar problem differently?
Pisces — Jellyfish / Sea Turtle
Sensitivity, flow & enduring wisdom
The jellyfish represents fluidity, sensitivity to its environment, and a way of moving that doesn’t rely on forceful control. The sea turtle represents endurance, navigation, protection, and a steady relationship with the currents of life.
Reflect: Where might you benefit from allowing yourself to flow, and where do you need a steadier sense of direction?
A moment for your own interpretation
Take another look at the Bestiary.
You might recognize yourself in one animal, feel drawn to another, or find that your relationship with a particular archetype changes over time. You may even interpret an animal differently from the way I do, and that’s welcome.
Consider these questions:
Which animal feels most familiar to you right now?
Which animal represents a quality you are learning to develop?
Which instinct helps you navigate life, and when might that same instinct work against you?
What would it look like to direct that instinct with greater awareness?
Does another animal speak to a part of you that you’ve overlooked?
You don’t need to force an answer. Let your observations develop naturally, and give yourself permission to revisit them later.
The Bestiary is a symbolic framework for reflection, not a fixed definition of your personality or a prediction of your future. Your zodiac sign can be a starting point, but your lived experiences, choices, and personal understanding matter, too.
You are allowed to discover what these animals mean to you.
